UK employees spend billions on personal AI tools

British workers are collectively spending approximately 1.3 billion dollars annually on generative artificial intelligence services for their professional duties, often without claiming reimbursement from their employers. This significant out-of-pocket expenditure highlights a growing trend where staff members are personally funding their access to advanced technology, even as a rising majority of the workforce maintains a negative attitude toward the integration of AI in the workplace.

The findings come from a recent workplace survey conducted by Deloitte and reported by Reuters. The study, described by the firm as the largest single-country investigation into workplace generative AI use, is based on responses from 25,000 workers across the continent. The data reveals that 63 percent of working adults in the UK actively use generative AI for work. This adoption rate is notably higher than figures from a similarly timed Gallup survey of US workers, which indicated that 52 percent of American employees use AI in some capacity, with only 15 percent doing so on a daily basis.

While nearly half of the UK respondents rely on free AI tools and 34 percent use employer-provided software, one in six users pays for at least one type of tool themselves. Despite this high level of engagement, the survey suggests that the actual deployment of the technology remains shallow. Workers are primarily using AI for surface-level tasks such as drafting emails or replacing traditional search engines, rather than leveraging more complex autonomous agents. Paul Lee, partner and head of industry insight at Deloitte UK, noted that the technology has quickly become part of everyday working life, yet its role remains basic for many.

Lee emphasised that the critical issue is not merely the usage of generative AI, but the manner in which it is being adopted. He observed that workers are utilising the tools despite limited training, patchy guidance, and in some cases, without their employer’s knowledge. This widespread but unstructured adoption underscores a disconnect between the enthusiasm for the technology and the formal support structures provided by organisations.
