The United Kingdom government has confirmed the appointment of two senior executives to the leadership team of its AI Security Institute. Henry de Zoete has been named as the new director, while Nate Burnikell has taken up the role of chief strategy officer. These changes mark a significant shift in the organisation’s management structure as it continues its work on artificial intelligence safety and national security.
De Zoete, who has served as a long-term advisor to the government on technology and investment matters, played a key role in the initial establishment of the institute. Beyond his public sector experience, he is a technology founder whose startup, Look After My Bills, was part of the 2018 Y Combinator cohort. His appointment follows the departure of interim director Adam Beaumont, who is returning to a previous position at the Government Communications Security Headquarters.
Burnikell brings a decade of experience working across various government departments to his new role. His previous posts include positions at the Cabinet Office and the Department for Levelling Up. Most recently, he worked with the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, the body under which the institute was originally founded before that department was scrapped. The AI Security Institute expressed its gratitude to Beaumont for guiding the organisation through a period of rapid growth and strengthening its global standing during his tenure.
