Elon Musk claims that the new artificial intelligence models’ capabilities will surpass the human intelligence by next year as long as electricity and hardware are available to meet the needs of this increasingly powerful technology.
Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur who runs Tesla, X, and SpaceX, said, “I think we’ll probably have AI that is more intelligent than any human by the end of the year.” Musk said that AI capabilities will likely surpass those of humans within the next five-year period, during a Monday interview with Nicolai Tangen, chief executive officer of Norges Bank Investment Management.
Musk is a consistent believer in the development of AI tools that are so powerful, they can defeat the most talented individuals in any field. The Monday prediction, however, is well ahead of the schedules that he and other experts had previously predicted. He predicted that “full” AGI could be achieved in 2029. Musk’s boldest claims, including the launch of self-driving Teslas or landing a rocket in Mars, are yet to be fulfilled.
AI has advanced faster than anticipated in the last 18 months due to a number of breakthroughs. These include the introduction of chatbots and video-generation tools. Demis Hassabis predicted in early this year that AGI would be possible by 2030.
A shortage of chips has slowed the pace of development, especially those made by Nvidia. These are crucial for training and running AI algorithms. Musk stated that these constraints are easing. However, new models will be testing data center equipment and the electrical grid.
“Last Year, it was chip-constrained. . . People couldn’t get enough Nvidia Chips. This year, the switchover to voltage transformers is taking place. “In a year or so, [the constraint will be] only electricity supply,” said he.
Musk’s desire to enter the AI race is in stark contrast to his high-profile position last year, when he called for a pause on advanced AI development. warned about the “profound dangers to society and humanity”, posed by super powerful AI tools, and demanded an immediate halt on the training of any system that is more powerful than OpenAI GPT-4, which was the leading model.
Musk announced on Monday that his AI startup, xAI was working to train a second version Grok, “which we believe should be better than GPT-4”. Musk said that the second version of Grok, which xAI was training “should be better than GPT-4”, should be completed by May. A new model with a power order of magnitude greater will follow.
Musk has devoted more time and energy to xAI in the last year. According to sources familiar with the process, he is trying to collect billions from investors in the US and Middle East to compete against OpenAI. This funding round would value the company around $18bn.
Musk played a pivotal, and sometimes contentious, part in the development of AI tools during the last decade.
He co-founded OpenAI in 2015. However, he left the company after a disagreement with co-founder and chief executive Sam Altman about the direction of the research.
Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in March for breach of contract, claiming that they had compromised their stated mission to build AI for humanity. OpenAI strongly denied this claim.
