European Patent Strengthens Poolbeg Pharma Intellectual Property Portfolio for POLB 001

Poolbeg Pharma PLC, the clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company listed on AIM, has secured a European patent for its POLB 001 treatment targeting cytokine release syndrome induced by cancer immunotherapy. The European Patent Office has granted protection across member states, marking the most commercially significant approval within Poolbeg’s CRS patent family to date.

The European grant follows earlier patent approvals in Australia during March and Canada in May 2026. The patent covers the use of p38 MAPK inhibitors, a class of anti-inflammatory compounds that includes POLB 001, for preventing cytokine release syndrome triggered by cancer immunotherapies. Cytokine release syndrome represents a potentially serious immune reaction that can occur when patients undergo certain immunotherapy treatments.

The company has stated that this protection enhances its intellectual property position as POLB 001 progresses through clinical trials. The TOPICAL trial, which is examining POLB 001 as a preventative treatment for CRS in patients with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma, remains on schedule to deliver interim data later this summer. Trial participants receive teclistamab, an approved bispecific antibody supplied by Johnson and Johnson without cost to Poolbeg.

According to the company, the European patent increases POLB 001’s attractiveness to potential partners at this critical stage of development. Management plans to provide additional updates regarding patent coverage extension to other jurisdictions in due course.

Jeremy Skillington, chief executive of Poolbeg, noted that the European grant strengthens the company’s intellectual property protection for POLB 001 in cancer immunotherapy-induced CRS. He emphasised that Europe represents one of the most strategically important pharmaceutical markets and that the grant enhances the commercial value of POLB 001 for potential partners. Skillington expressed encouragement regarding the combination of the strengthened patent portfolio and the forthcoming interim trial data.

The development positions Poolbeg Pharma to expand its intellectual property coverage across key pharmaceutical markets as the company advances its clinical programme and pursues potential partnership opportunities.
