Precious metal prices climbed significantly on Friday after the United States economy unexpectedly lost jobs in July, a development that diminished expectations for further interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve.
Comex December gold futures rose 2.3 per cent to reach $4,401 an ounce by mid-morning New York time, marking its highest level since June. Silver also strengthened substantially with September contracts jumping 3.6 per cent to $63.85 an ounce. Both metals reached seven-week highs during this period.
The underlying economic data showed nonfarm payrolls falling by 23,000 in July, contrary to forecasts predicting a gain of around 80,000 positions. Previous employment figures for June and May were also revised downwards, reducing the twelve-month average job growth rate. The unemployment rate decreased slightly to 4.1 per cent as labour force participation slipped to its lowest level in over five years.
This report represented the first monthly contraction in payrolls since February and highlighted slowing momentum in the US labour market just as policymakers balance persistent inflation against weaker employment signs. Financial markets reacted quickly by lowering expectations for a September rate increase, causing Treasury yields to fall while equity indices advanced. This shift alleviated some downward pressure on precious metals that had existed due to fears of restrictive monetary policy.
Gold and silver typically benefit from lower interest rate expectations because they generate no yield themselves. A decline in bond yields can also weaken the US dollar, making these commodities cheaper for international buyers using other currencies. The employment report now complicates future Federal Reserve decisions as officials weigh inflation concerns against a labour market recording an outright decline.
Mining equities had already gained ground before Friday’s data release. Agnico Eagle Mines closed 1.5 per cent higher in New York, extending its weekly gain to nearly 14 per cent. Shares of Newmont advanced by 1.1 per cent while Barrick Mining rose slightly as well.
