Goldman Sachs reports 284 per cent rise in sports private equity deals

Private equity investment in the sports sector has expanded dramatically, with the number of transactions increasing by 284 per cent between 2018 and 2025. A new report from Goldman Sachs, titled Playing for Scale, indicates that deal volume rose from 50 to 192 over this period. This growth reflects a broader influx of institutional capital into the industry following the pandemic, driven by the perception that sports clubs represent a resilient asset class that frequently appreciates in value.

The research highlights that private equity funds are now active across the entire sports ecosystem. These investors participate as consortium members in controlling ownership bids, acquire minority stakes as passive partners, and in some instances seek full control of teams. In response to this increased participation, leagues have developed governance frameworks that permit private equity firms to enter team capitalisation tables. The report notes that these firms typically impose rigorous standards for financial management, governance, and transparency during their due diligence processes. Consequently, many teams have professionalised their operations, evolving into more formalised businesses with the potential to generate significant global revenue.

Several high-profile examples illustrate this trend. Arctos Partners is seeking to commit over $12 billion to purchases of NFL team stakes. In the Premier League, Clearlake Capital holds a majority ownership of Chelsea after acquiring additional shares from Todd Boehly and Mark Walter earlier this year. Silver Lake Partners are shareholders in Manchester City, which is currently appealing a verdict from an independent panel that found it guilty of breaching more than 100 finance-related charges. Other notable investments include Dynasty Equity’s stake in Liverpool, alongside Fenway Sports Group and Jeff Bezos, and Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment’s holding in Crystal Palace. Private equity vehicles also feature in the ownership structures of Aston Villa and Bournemouth, though in these cases they operate through the personal funds of the owners. Despite this surge in activity, the report concludes that institutional ownership still constitutes a small portion of the total addressable market.
