Lloyds Banking Group restores services after latest app outage

Lloyds Banking Group has confirmed that its digital banking services have been restored following a disruption that affected customers across its Lloyds, Halifax and Scottish Widows brands. The group stated that it was working to normalise operations as quickly as possible while users reported difficulties accessing their accounts. A spokesperson acknowledged that some customers experienced issues for a short period earlier in the day and apologised for the inconvenience caused.

The outage triggered a significant volume of complaints, with the tracking service Downdetector recording a spike of nearly three thousand reports during the early Wednesday afternoon. Social media reactions highlighted frustration among users, with one customer describing the frequency of such incidents as becoming too common and considering switching providers. Another user expressed irritation at the timing of the failure, noting that it prevented them from completing a payment shortly after moving from Halifax to Lloyds, a transition linked to the group’s recent decision to phase out the Halifax brand.

This incident marks the second time in just over a week that the Lloyds application has experienced a significant outage, following a similar disruption earlier in the month. The group, which is the largest UK retail banking unit serving more than 25 million customers, also suffered a major technical error earlier this year that allowed over 400,000 users to access transactions belonging to other customers. The latest failure adds to a broader pattern of reliability concerns in the sector, as a Treasury Committee report from last March indicated that nine of the UK’s largest banks and building societies were down for over 803 hours over the previous two years.
