OpenAI Surpasses One Billion Active Users

Sarah Friar, Chief Financial Officer of OpenAI, confirmed in a blog post dated July 31 that the company’s artificial intelligence models now serve more than one billion active users and over two million businesses. The executive noted that as confidence grows among these adopters, deployment becomes both deeper and more frequent.

Individuals who utilise this technology for six months send fifty per cent more messages daily and apply ChatGPT to twice the variety of tasks compared with earlier usage patterns. Within corporate environments, organisations typically begin by integrating AI into a single team or specific workflow before expanding adoption across their wider operations. Friar described the current stage as early in the evolution, predicting that future systems will manage longer projects, coordinate between different tools and handle more work from initial idea to finished result.

Small businesses are expected to gain capabilities previously restricted to larger organisations while enterprises apply intelligence broadly throughout their activities. A PYMNTS Intelligence report titled The AI On-Ramp suggests generative AI becomes a mass habit through small repeatable daily tasks such as finding product links, drafting texts or emails and symptom lookup. Another study found financial services and insurance firms lead enterprise adoption with structured auditable back-office functions being the most common use cases.

OpenAI recently adjusted pricing for three models to improve performance per dollar across enterprise workloads. The price of GPT-5.6 Luna was reduced by eighty per cent while GPT-5.6 Terra saw a twenty per cent cut. Faster performance was provided for GPT-5.6 Sol in the API without changing its cost. Friar stated these adjustments expand practical work ranges and give customers flexibility to balance intelligence speed reliability and cost effectively.
