TotalEnergies has announced a three-year strategic partnership with French artificial intelligence firm Mistral to develop advanced models for oil and gas reservoir exploration and engineering. The joint programme involves an investment of more than €100m aimed at improving the capacity to integrate, process and interpret large volumes of geoscientific data. This collaboration seeks to combine TotalEnergies’ deep expertise in subsurface geoscience and reservoir engineering with Mistral’s technological and scientific resources to create a new generation of analytical tools.
The primary objective of the initiative is to generate multiple development scenarios for exploration opportunities while optimising or extending the life of existing projects. The companies intend to employ next-generation AI techniques, including agentic AI, to process up to ten petaflops of data. This computational effort will be supported by nearly a century of accumulated geoscience knowledge held by TotalEnergies. To facilitate this work, the two organisations plan to establish a shared scientific laboratory that brings together the experience of TotalEnergies’ subsurface specialists and the technical skills of Mistral’s scientific team.
Patrick Pouyanné, chairman and chief executive of TotalEnergies, stated that exploration and reservoir engineering represent areas where artificial intelligence can create significant value. He noted that by combining historical data, team expertise and Mistral’s capabilities, the partnership aims to support experts in analysing complex data and decision-making processes. Pouyanné also highlighted that the collaboration illustrates the company’s commitment to contributing to a high-performing European digital ecosystem and supporting its competitiveness.
Arthur Mensch, co-founder and chief executive of Mistral, expressed delight at taking the collaboration to the next level. He said the project demonstrates the ability of the company’s models to support complex industrial processes and adapt to demanding scientific and energy challenges. Mensch added that the partnership highlights the strength of Europe’s industrial ecosystem and the importance of adopting customisable AI solutions that protect intellectual property. The collaboration supports TotalEnergies’ efforts to create proprietary AI models within a European digital ecosystem, while allowing Mistral to develop its presence in the European market.
Earlier this month, TotalEnergies completed an asset swap with Galp following an agreement reached in December 2025. Under the terms of the deal, TotalEnergies acquired a 40% operated interest in the PEL83 licence, which includes the Mopane discovery. In return, Galp received a 10% participating interest in the PEL56 licence, covering the Venus discovery, and a 9.39% participating interest in the PEL91 licence.
