Meta to Lay Off Thousands of Employees as Focus Shifts to Artificial Intelligence

Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is poised to implement significant job cuts across its global workforce. Reports indicate that approximately ten per cent of the company’s staff, equating to nearly 8,000 employees, will be laid off starting next month. This initial round of cuts is expected to be followed by further job losses later in the year, though specific details regarding timing and the scale of these additional reductions have not yet been confirmed.

Mark Zuckerberg, the chief executive of Meta, is redirecting substantial resources into artificial intelligence, with plans to invest hundreds of billions of dollars into this area. This strategic shift represents a broader pattern among major U.S. companies, particularly within the technology sector, as they seek to enhance efficiency and streamline operations.

In recent months, other technology firms have also enacted significant layoffs. Amazon has reduced its corporate workforce by 30,000 employees, which constitutes nearly ten per cent of its white-collar staff. Similarly, fintech company Block dismissed about half of its workforce, amounting to roughly 4,000 jobs, citing efficiency gains attributable to artificial intelligence as a key reason for these reductions.

According to Layoffs.fyi, a platform tracking job losses in the tech sector, a total of 73,212 employees have already lost their jobs worldwide in 2024. The overall numbers for the previous year reached 153,000. Meta’s impending layoffs mark the company’s most drastic move since the earlier restructuring efforts in late 2022 and early 2023, branded as the “year of efficiency,” during which approximately 21,000 positions were eliminated.

The current financial standing of Meta appears more robust than during the last wave of layoffs. Executives now envision a future with fewer management layers and improved efficiency driven by AI-powered employees.

As of December 31, 2023, Meta employed nearly 79,000 individuals, according to the company’s latest filings. Recent reorganisations within the Reality Labs division have resulted in engineers being reassigned to a new Applied AI organisation focused on hastening the development of AI agents designed to autonomously perform complex tasks.
