NHS faces deadline risk in replacing Palantir data platform

The National Health Service may fail to replace Palantir before the deadline for its 330 million pound data contract expires. This potential delay raises significant concerns for government ministers as pressure intensifies to sever ties with the American technology firm. The warning emerges while officials evaluate the company’s future role, coinciding with a surge in public objections to the platform’s data processing capabilities.

Health minister James Frith acknowledged in a letter to the Health and Social Care Committee that the practical timetable for replacing the Federated Data Platform could prove challenging. He stated that officials are currently assessing the continuity and reliability of the service. Frith noted that if a successor contract is deemed necessary, standard government procurement processes make it unlikely that a new agreement will be finalised by March. This admission highlights the logistical difficulties inherent in transitioning away from the existing system within the required timeframe.

The decision comes amid growing scrutiny over whether the platform delivers the value promised to taxpayers. The NHS Chief Data Officers Network recently criticised the system for failing to demonstrate the expected level of evidence and realised value. In response, Palantir cited government estimates projecting 808 million pounds in benefits and a return of 4.92 pounds for every pound spent. The company also highlighted operational improvements, including over 117,000 additional operations and a 14.3 per cent reduction in discharge delays for long-stay patients. Meanwhile, more than 44,000 individuals have lodged formal objections under UK data protection law, although Palantir maintains it acts solely as a data processor without access to information beyond customer authorisation.
