Polling conducted by Apella reveals a striking discontent among older Britons regarding the current economic landscape. Many aged between 56 and 64 express a compelling desire for radical changes, asserting that the economic system is fundamentally broken.
According to the survey, 45 per cent of respondents in this age group agree with the sentiment that the entire economic apparatus must be replaced. This contrasts with only 34 per cent of those aged 18 to 29 who share similar views. The data indicates a greater prevalence of frustration among older voters, who feel the economic environment is increasingly unyielding.
The findings show that older Britons are also more inclined to believe that their efforts in the workforce are futile. Sixty-two per cent of individuals aged 55 to 64 agree with the statement that no matter how hard they work, the system is stacked against them. A significant 59 per cent of those aged 40 to 54 express similar sentiments, whereas a little over half of younger voters report feeling pessimistic about their financial futures.
Among voters supporting Reform UK, the call for an overhaul of the system reaches 56 per cent. Just under half of current Green Party voters agree with this view, as the party aims to implement wealth taxes on the super-rich to improve public services. In contrast, Labour voters are less inclined to advocate for dramatic economic reform, with only 18 per cent supporting such changes. Interestingly, 30 per cent of Conservative voters express a desire for a new economic framework as well.
The survey was conducted shortly after Rachel Reeves’s second budget, leading to speculation about the growing frustration in society. Analysts suggest that those in their 40s and 50s feel they have worked diligently for decades yet are seeing diminishing returns as living costs escalate and retirement seems increasingly unattainable.
Political and business leaders should consider this sentiment of ‘middle-aged misery’ when formulating policy or strategy in the current economic climate.
