Versatile RobotX, a University of Essex spinout, has secured more than one million pounds in blended equity investment and grant funding. The capital is intended to accelerate the commercial deployment of its artificial intelligence powered agricultural robots, which are designed to address labour shortages and improve harvest efficiency in the farming sector.
The funding package combines equity backing from the British Design Fund with grant awards from two government initiatives. These include Innovate UK’s Growth Catalyst Investor Partnerships scheme and the Defra Farming Innovation Programme. The company was founded by Professor Klaus McDonald-Maier and Dr Vishwanathan Mohan, who developed autonomous crop handling and harvesting systems to automate delicate agricultural tasks.
The technology integrates embedded AI, machine vision, and robotic manipulation arms. It has already undergone field validation through pilot trials with commercial UK growers, including Wilkin & Sons of Tiptree and JEPCO. The new capital will be deployed to prepare the startup’s modular robots for volume manufacturing and to broaden trials across additional crop types. The company also plans to support the rollout of a Robotics as a Service commercial model for domestic and international farms.
Professor McDonald-Maier stated that agriculture faces unprecedented challenges regarding labour availability, food security, and sustainability. He noted that the funding will allow the company to accelerate the transition from successful field trials to commercial deployment, aiming to make advanced robotics affordable and accessible to growers worldwide. Dr Mohan added that growers consistently identify affordability, reliability, and ease of deployment as key barriers to automation. He said the funding package will help scale manufacturing readiness, strengthen customer engagement, and demonstrate how the service model can provide a practical route to adoption for farms of all sizes.
