The chief executive of one of London’s prominent artificial intelligence companies has issued a warning regarding “AI-sloppification.” Victor Riparbelli, co-founder of Synthesia, expressed concern over an increase in excessively verbose documents generated by large language models. He stated that overly detailed content hinders productivity, as readers are burdened with distilling complex materials.
Riparbelli’s comments were made in a company-wide memo, where he pointed out that no one desires to read documents filled with unnecessary information. He clarified that while large language models are effective at enhancing thought processes and expediting writing, there is a critical balance to maintain between depth and clarity. Writing should focus on being concise, rather than lengthy and convoluted.
The CEO highlighted that when documents become overly verbose, it shifts the responsibility of understanding onto the readers. Instead of one individual refining a document, many people must spend extra time reading poorly constructed content, which can lead to a decline in overall productivity.
Synthesia, valued at £4 billion during its last funding round in January, utilizes artificial intelligence to create realistic videos for employee training and marketing purposes. The company serves 90 per cent of Fortune 500 companies, making it a pivotal player in the AI landscape.
Riparbelli’s concerns mirror a growing problem of low-quality content produced through AI tools, often referred to as “slop.” Since the advent of ChatGPT in November 2022, AI-generated content has surged, making its presence felt in both online platforms and workplaces. Research indicates that a significant proportion of new websites and posts on professional networks, such as LinkedIn, are authored by AI.
Despite the challenges posed by AI-generated content, Riparbelli encouraged his staff to explore these technologies with the aim of producing more concise and meaningful communication. He asserted that the rising trend of AI-sloppification will inevitably increase the value of skilled human communicators.
