Amazon has declared plans to eliminate 16000 jobs across its global operations as part of a second round of layoffs aimed at streamlining the company’s structure. This decision follows an earlier announcement last October, which involved cutting 14000 white-collar positions, with a broader goal of shedding around 30000 staff members.
The reductions primarily affect white-collar roles across various sectors, including Amazon Web Services, Prime Video, and human resources. While most of the job cuts are expected to take place in the United States, reports indicate that teams in both the UK and India will also be impacted. Amazon currently employs approximately 75000 individuals in the UK, although the exact number of affected jobs remains undisclosed.
Amazon’s senior vice president of people experience and technology, Beth Galetti, explained that the aim of these layoffs is to enhance organisational efficiency by reducing management layers. She noted that employees in the US will be provided with a 90-day period to seek new roles within the company, although the timeline for international employees will depend on local requirements.
While the company acknowledged the rise of artificial intelligence as an influencing factor in the decision to cut jobs, chief executive Andy Jassy clarified that this restructuring is more about company culture than financial necessity. He stated that the company expanded its workforce significantly during the Covid-19 pandemic to meet increased demand for online services. As a result, the organisational structure became overly complex.
The recent announcements mark the largest job cuts in Amazon’s three-decade history. In the context of ongoing advancements in artificial intelligence, the company anticipates that efficiencies achieved will contribute to a gradual reduction in its corporate workforce.
Despite these significant layoffs, Amazon continues to maintain a large workforce, employing approximately 158 million individuals globally, with the majority located in its warehouses.
