Government launches North West AI apprenticeship pilot to tackle youth unemployment

The UK government has initiated a series of artificial intelligence training bootcamps in the North West of England, aiming to address rising concerns regarding youth unemployment. The initiative, known as the TechFirst AI Apprenticeship Pathway, is a three-week programme designed to recruit young people from communities in areas including Wigan, Blackburn and Blackpool. Participants will receive specialised skills training in AI alongside broader career development support.

The apprenticeship training will be delivered by IN4 Group and is backed by a coalition of businesses and public sector organisations across the region. Major employers such as JD Sports and Heinz are involved in the scheme, which includes work placement offers for participants. Up to 70 young people aged between 16 and 21 will take part in this pilot programme. The initiative seeks to connect these individuals with practical training and employment opportunities within their local communities.

AI Minister Kaniskha Narayan stated that artificial intelligence is already transforming the world of work, from administrative tools to high-end technology boosting fields such as medical research. She described the scheme as a significant opportunity to equip young people with the skills necessary to thrive in an AI-driven workplace and build careers in exciting industries. The pilot will test best practices and outcomes to inform a larger England-wide AI skills scheme scheduled for rollout next summer.

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy emphasised that young people in every postcode deserve the chance for a strong start to their adult lives. She noted that the government is tackling the youth unemployment crisis directly through this first-of-its-kind bootcamp, which supports young people at a crucial juncture by linking them with training and career prospects.
