NextSource Materials has announced the execution of a non-binding letter of intent with a prominent Japanese anode material producer to negotiate long-term supply agreements for electric vehicle battery materials. The Canadian company stated the proposed arrangements would encompass the supply of anode active materials commencing in 2027 from its planned Battery Anode Facility in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
The Japanese producer has requested anonymity owing to confidentiality requirements, according to NextSource. The letter of intent follows an extensive technical evaluation and qualification process wherein the Japanese producer assessed NextSource’s anode products for integration into its global battery materials supply chain. The producer supplies multiple automotive manufacturers and battery cell producers.
The letter of intent establishes a framework to negotiate two concurrent, multi-year supply agreements covering multiple grades of anode active material to be manufactured at the Abu Dhabi facility. Should the agreements reach completion, they would supplement NextSource’s previously disclosed binding, multi-year offtake agreement with Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation to supply approximately 9,000 tonnes annually of anode material to a major original equipment manufacturer’s North American electric vehicle operations.
Collectively, the potential agreements would fully utilise and exceed the anticipated 14,000 tonnes per year production capacity of Phase 1 of the Abu Dhabi facility, the company indicated. Pricing under the proposed agreements would be determined through a market-linked mechanism, with final specifications and commercial terms to be established in definitive contracts.
NextSource chief executive Hanré Rossouw characterised the letter of intent as another significant milestone in developing a portfolio of long-term commercial relationships with globally recognised battery materials participants. Following successful validation of the company’s anode products, Rossouw stated this offtake partnership further reduces risk associated with the UAE Battery Anode Facility and demonstrates clear market demand for sustainably produced, vertically integrated graphite products.
The letter of intent remains non-binding and subject to final technical qualification and execution of definitive agreements, NextSource confirmed.
