Summer Holiday Flights at Risk Amid Jet Fuel Shortages

Britons may face cancelled summer holidays due to a looming jet fuel shortage across Europe, experts warn. The executive director of the International Energy Agency, Fatih Birol, stated that Europe has approximately six weeks’ worth of jet fuel reserves remaining, signalling potential flight cancellations just before the peak summer travel season.

Birol described the situation as the most severe energy crisis since the disruption of the Strait of Hormuz due to recent conflicts. Airlines could be compelled to cancel up to ten per cent of their flights in the coming months, particularly impacting routes less favoured by passengers. Increased operational costs may force airlines to reassess their schedules and tighten routes.

The price of jet fuel has surged, doubling since the onset of the conflict. Airlines are already responding by cutting back on unprofitable routes while raising ticket prices. Virgin Atlantic has enacted a £50 fuel surcharge on economy tickets and up to £360 for business class, reflecting rising operational costs.

In Britain, where nearly two-thirds of fuel imports are sourced from the Middle East, disruptions could be particularly pronounced. To address these challenges, the government has convened a team to manage contingency plans, focusing on jet fuel shortages alongside other critical supplies such as fertiliser and carbon dioxide.

Several airlines, including KLM, have already announced flight cancellations due to rising fuel costs. EasyJet reported an increase in costs amounting to £25 million in March alone. Efforts to hedge against fluctuating fuel prices have varied among airlines; those lacking strong hedging strategies may face greater challenges ahead.

Industry experts advise that passengers prepare for possible cancellations. The Atol protection scheme is in place to safeguard holidaymakers, ensuring that any cancellations will allow for full refunds or alternative flights.

Despite the current concerns, Airlines UK has indicated that UK airlines are not yet experiencing significant global jet fuel supply disruptions. Continuous engagement with fuel suppliers and government officials aims to monitor the evolving situation closely.
