Wayve and Uber secure autonomous ride licences in London

Transport for London has issued private hire vehicle licences to a fleet of Wayve electric cars, marking significant progress toward launching fully autonomous passenger services across the capital. This regulatory approval fulfils the triple-lock requirement necessary for private hire operations, ensuring that both the operator and driver hold valid credentials from the same authority alongside the vehicles themselves.

The upcoming trials will operate under the government’s established code of practice for automated vehicle testing while utilising Uber’s existing TfL licence as the operating entity. Each autonomous car is engineered to perform driving tasks independently but remains accompanied by a trained, licensed private hire driver on board. This onboard professional monitors the journey and retains the capability to intervene or assume control if technical issues arise.

Prior to authorisation, every vehicle underwent rigorous inspection to verify compliance with all safety standards and policy mandates set by Transport for London. In preparation for this launch phase, over 100,000 residents have registered their interest in participating as passengers during the initial rollout period.

Sarah Gates, Vice President of global affairs and assurance at Wayve, described the licensing decision as a pivotal moment enabling citizens to experience autonomous driving technology firsthand. She emphasised that responsible deployment aims to deliver safer, cleaner and quieter streets while maintaining close collaboration with regulators and communities. The initiative represents another step toward realising fully automated ride-hailing services within London’s transport network.
