Metir PLC, the AIM-listed water and environmental monitoring technology group, has entered into a memorandum of understanding with Portsmouth Aviation to develop integrated water treatment and monitoring solutions. The collaboration will initially target opportunities in the Gulf region.

The agreement combines Metir’s Microtox biological water quality monitoring platform, marketed under its Modern Water brand, with PaquaVida, the purification technology developed by Portsmouth Aviation’s Paqua division. The partnership will explore joint customer engagement, technical collaboration, demonstration projects and pilot installations across both the United Kingdom and international markets.

The Gulf Cooperation Council region has been identified as the primary focus for initial deployment. The area represents a significant market opportunity due to substantial ongoing investment in desalination infrastructure, water reuse facilities and critical water infrastructure. This investment environment has created strong demand for integrated treatment and monitoring systems.

Modern Water currently maintains a substantial operational footprint in the region, with 27 Microtox continuous toxicity monitors deployed throughout Doha’s drinking water network. Portsmouth Aviation similarly maintains an established commercial presence in Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

The PaquaVida system comprises a mobile, containerised platform capable of producing up to 300,000 litres of potable water daily from non-potable sources. The technology generates hypochlorous acid disinfectant on site, providing an integrated treatment solution.

The scope of the memorandum extends beyond immediate deployment to include potential collaboration on PFAS and pathogen detection capabilities. The companies will target municipal, industrial and desalination customers across these application areas.

Bob Moore, executive chairman and chief executive of Metir, characterised the combination of the companies’ technologies as creating a unique offering that spans treatment through to continuous biological monitoring. Simon Escott, chief executive of Portsmouth Aviation, described the technologies as highly complementary, noting that the partnership would support Paqua’s objective of delivering sustainable water treatment in remote locations.

The agreement represents a strategic move for both organisations to capitalise on growing demand for advanced water management solutions in regions facing water scarcity and quality challenges.
