Global Airline Capacity Declines Amid Geopolitical Tensions in March 2026

Global airline capacity experienced a decline in March 2026, with the weakness predominantly affecting international travel routes as geopolitical tensions exerted pressure on passenger demand, according to research published by UBS.

European capacity contracted by 3% on a year-on-year basis, driven primarily by reductions in international traffic attributed to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. This represented a deterioration from February’s flat growth trajectory. The decline proved broad-based across the continent, with the United Kingdom and France registering capacity reductions of 4% year-on-year whilst Germany recorded a steeper 6% fall.

Southern European markets demonstrated greater resilience during the period. Spain’s growth rate moderated to flat performance and Italy maintained modest expansion of 1%.

United States capacity similarly weakened, declining 2% year-on-year following a flat performance in the previous month. International routes constituted the principal area of weakness, falling 5%, whilst domestic traffic demonstrated stability.

China emerged as a notable exception to the global trend. Capacity growth remained stable at approximately 10% year-on-year, underpinned by robust domestic demand which offset softer international travel patterns.

UBS noted that its airline traffic monitor, which tracks flight numbers and seat capacity on a global basis, provides an early indication of revenue trends prior to companies reporting quarterly results. The data suggests that whilst demand remains intact in certain regions, international travel has exhibited sensitivity to geopolitical disruption.

Airline sector equities recorded gains on the day the research was published, following news that the United States and Iran had agreed a two-week ceasefire to facilitate peace negotiations.
