Vodafone Reports Mixed Results Amid Competitive Pressures in Germany

Vodafone, a leading telecommunications company, has announced mixed financial results primarily affected by competitive pressures in Germany. The firm recorded a 1.1 per cent decline in broadband revenue in its largest market, coupled with ongoing challenges in mobile pricing.

During the December quarter, organic service revenue in Germany increased by 0.7 per cent; however, this fell short of City analysts’ expectations, which predicted a rise of about 1 per cent. Margherita Della Valle, the company’s chief executive, indicated that the German market remains highly competitive, emphasising that Vodafone is striving to optimise its offerings between quantity and value.

Despite these hurdles, the German operations experienced their second consecutive quarter of organic revenue growth. Mobile revenue benefited from a wholesale deal with 1&1, allowing for the transfer of customers onto its network. The existing legal framework complicating the market has also posed challenges for Vodafone, particularly following recent legislative changes unbundling cable television services.

In comparison, Vodafone’s performance in the UK showed signs of improvement, with organic broadband revenue increasing by 4.8 per cent. Della Valle expressed optimism for growth in the UK market, especially following the company’s merger with Three, which has positioned it as the largest mobile network operator in Britain.

The company’s shares, although up 60 per cent over the past year, saw a decline of 4.7 per cent at the end of trading on Thursday. Nevertheless, Vodafone has raised its guidance for profit and cash flow for the financial year, aiming for substantial cost savings and a potential increase in dividends.

Vodafone’s commitment to expanding its presence on the ground has led to an increase in marketing activities, notably through sponsorship and community collaborations. Della Valle highlighted the importance of the high street presence to Vodafone’s business model, despite plans for potential store closures in the future.
